In its former life as an industrial district, Isola was once cut off from the rest of the city by rail tracks and watercourses. However, it was not from this state of seclusion that the evocative name Isola, which literally translates as "Island," came to be. When viewed on old maps, the name appears to predate urbanization, indicating nothing more than a series of fields surrounded by irrigation ditches. Perhaps the landscape architects had this in mind when they designed the Library of driving directions Trees, and they were attempting to reconcile the area's urban soul with its agricultural origins through their design. This green expanse now serves as an open-space bridge connecting the city center and the surrounding neighborhoods. It all depends on your point of view as to whether it has given Isola a new lease on life or trampled on its secluded nature.
